अर्जुन उवाच
यः स मेधवपुः श्रीमान् बृहत्पङ्कजलोचनः ॥
स कृष्णः सह रामेण त्यक्त्वा देहं दिवं गतः ॥
मौसले वृष्णिवीराणां विनाशो ब्रह्मशापजः ॥
बभूव वीरान्तकरः प्रभासे रोमहर्षणः ॥
ये ते शूरा महात्मानः सिंहदर्पा महाबलाः ॥
भोजवृष्ण्यन्धका ब्रह्मन्न् अन्योन्यं तैर् हतं युधि ॥
गदापरिघशक्तीनां सहाः परिघबाहवः ॥
त एरकाभिर् निहताः पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥
हतं पञ्चशतं तेषां सहस्रं बाहुशालिनाम् ॥
निधनं समनुप्राप्तं समासाद्येतरेतरम् ॥

sa kṛṣṇaḥ saha rāmeṇa tyaktvā dehaṃ divaṃ gataḥ ||
mausale vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṃ vināśo brahmaśāpajaḥ ||
babhūva vīrāntakaraḥ prabhāse romaharṣaṇaḥ ||
ye te śūrā mahātmānaḥ siṃhadarpā mahābalāḥ ||
bhojavṛṣṇyandhakā brahmann anyonyaṃ tair hataṃ yudhi ||
gadāparighaśaktīnāṃ sahāḥ parighabāhavaḥ ||
ta erakābhir nihatāḥ paśya kālasya paryayam ||
hataṃ pañcaśataṃ teṣāṃ sahasraṃ bāhuśālinām ||
nidhanaṃ samanuprāptaṃ samāsādyetaretaram ||
Arjuna said: That glorious one, dark as a cloud, with great lotus eyes — that Krishna together with Rama, abandoning the body, has departed to heaven. At Prabhasa, in the mace-battle among the Vrishni heroes, destruction born of the brahmin's curse befell them — terrible, annihilating the heroes. Those heroes, great of spirit, lion-proud and mighty — the Bhojas, Vrishnis, and Andhakas, O brahmin — were slain by one another in battle. They who withstood the blows of maces, clubs, and spears, whose arms were like iron bars — they were killed by blades of eraka grass; behold the reversal of Time! Five hundred thousand of the mighty-armed were destroyed, meeting their end by coming against one another.

"Behold the reversal of Time": men who withstood the blows of maces and spears fell to worthless blades of grass. In this disproportion lies the lesson about the absolute sovereignty of Time, before which all power is vain: not great weapons but a mere grass-blade, turned by fate into a thunderbolt, lays heroes low. Thus the pride of strength is put to shame by smallness, to reveal that salvation lies not in strength. The verse teaches that the might upon which the proud relies is nothing before the will of Time, which the Lord directs — for He can bring down the unconquerable with a blade of grass; and that the "reversal of Time" is a visible reminder of the transience of all earthly greatness, calling one to seek refuge not in passing strength but in the imperishable Lord, over Whom Time has no power.
