व्यास उवाच
ब्रह्मशापविनिर्दग्धा वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः ॥
विनष्टाः कुरुशार्दूल न ताञ् शोचितुम् अर्हसि ॥
भवितव्यं तथा तद् धि दिष्टम् एतन् महात्मनाम् ॥
उपेक्षितं च कृष्णेन शक्तेनापि व्यपोहितुम् ॥
त्रैलोक्यम् अपि कृष्णो हि कृत्स्नं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ॥
प्रसहेद् अन्यथा कर्तुं किम् उ शापं मनीषिणाम् ॥
रथस्य पुरतो याति यः स चक्रगदाधरः ॥
तव स्नेहात् पुराणर्षिर् वासुदेवश् चतुर्भुजः ॥
कृत्वा भारावतरणं पृथिव्याः पृथुलोचनः ॥
मोक्षयित्वा जगत् सर्वं गतः स्वस्थानम् उत्तमम् ॥

brahmaśāpavinirdagdhā vṛṣṇyandhakamahārathāḥ ||
vinaṣṭāḥ kuruśārdūla na tāñ śocitum arhasi ||
bhavitavyaṃ tathā tad dhi diṣṭam etan mahātmanām ||
upekṣitaṃ ca kṛṣṇena śaktenāpi vyapohitum ||
trailokyam api kṛṣṇo hi kṛtsnaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam ||
prasahed anyathā kartuṃ kim u śāpaṃ manīṣiṇām ||
rathasya purato yāti yaḥ sa cakragadādharaḥ ||
tava snehāt purāṇarṣir vāsudevaś caturbhujaḥ ||
kṛtvā bhārāvataraṇaṃ pṛthivyāḥ pṛthulocanaḥ ||
mokṣayitvā jagat sarvaṃ gataḥ svasthānam uttamam ||
Vyasa said: Consumed by the brahmin's curse, the great warriors of the Vrishnis and Andhakas have perished, O tiger among the Kurus; you must not mourn them. It was meant to be thus — it was ordained for the great ones, and permitted by Krishna, though he had the power to avert it. For Krishna could have made the three worlds — the entire unmoving and moving creation — otherwise; what then of the curse of sages! He who walked before your chariot bearing discus and mace — that four-armed Vasudeva, the ancient sage, out of love for you — having accomplished the removal of the earth's burden, the wide-eyed one, having freed the entire world, has departed to his supreme abode.

Vyasa proclaims the supreme truth: Krishna is the Supreme Lord, with power to alter even the three worlds, and therefore the destruction of the Yadavas was accomplished not contrary to His will but by His sanction — He "permitted" it, though capable of averting it. He who walked out of love before Arjuna's chariot was not merely a charioteer or a friend, but the eternal Narayana who had descended to remove the earth's burden and has now returned "to His supreme abode." Thus His departure is not death but the completion of a descent. The verse teaches that Krishna is the Supreme Lord by whose will both the flourishing and the destruction of worlds is accomplished, and nothing happens without His sanction; and that His advent was a descent for the liberation of the earth, while His departure was a return to the eternal abode — and therefore before the destinies He ordains, one should not grieve but hold in reverence.
