Here the meaning of the vision unfolds: the forefathers perish because their only descendant, absorbed in asceticism, has rejected family life and given no continuation to the line. This is a subtle and important lesson of dharma: even austerity, when undertaken only for oneself and at the expense of duty, turns into a fault. Jaratkaru, striving for his own liberation, forgot his debt to his ancestors (pitri-rina). Scripture affirms a hierarchy of duties: one cannot neglect one's kin and one's duty for the sake of one's own spiritual ascent — true renunciation is not selfish. Recognizing his forefathers in those who hang there, Jaratkaru at once humbles himself and asks, "What shall I do?" — a model of filial submission. Here it is revealed that genuine spirituality does not contradict the fulfillment of duty but includes care for others; the Lord is pleased with one who serves, not with one who seeks only his own salvation. The forefathers' plea — "for your own sake and for ours" — shows that the fulfillment of dharma saves both the one who performs it and those bound to him.
