'From the mouth of the serpent Vasuki, whom the gods were swiftly [pulling], smoky and flaming winds burst forth again and again. Those clouds of smoke turned into thunderclouds with lightning and showered rain upon the gods, worn out by toil and heat. And from the mountain's summit showers of flowers poured down, scattering garlands upon the gods and asuras on every side. A great roar arose, like the thunder of a huge cloud — [the roar] of the ocean being churned by Mandara through the gods and asuras. [There] various water-creatures, crushed by the great mountain, perished by the hundreds in the salt waters; and the water-beings dwelling at the bottom of Patala (the netherworld) [the mountain] destroyed. And as that mountain turned, huge trees, rubbing against one another, fell together with their birds from its summit. And the fire born of their friction, blazing up again and again, enveloped Mount Mandara like lightning [wrapping] a dark cloud; it burned the elephants and lions that had rushed out [of the forests], and all the various creatures that had lost their lives. That fire, which devoured [everything] here and there, Indra, best of the immortals, everywhere extinguished with rain water from the clouds.'
