Suta said: 'Then the daityas and danavas, seizing choice weapons and diverse arms, all together rushed upon the gods. But the valiant lord, the god Vishnu, together with Nara, took that amrita and seized it from the lords of the danavas. And all the hosts of gods, in that great confusion, then drank of that amrita, receiving it from Vishnu. But at the time when the gods were drinking the coveted amrita, the danava Rahu, taking the form of a god, began to drink as well. And when the amrita had reached only the throat of that danava, the Sun and the Moon exposed him, wishing well for the gods. Then the Lord, with his discus-weapon, severed his adorned head — the head of him who had drunk the amrita by force. The huge head of the danava, like a mountain peak, cut off by the discus, fell, shaking the surface of the earth. From that time an eternal enmity was established, issuing from the mouth of Rahu: and to this day he swallows the Moon and the Sun. And the Lord Hari, casting off his incomparable female form, with fearsome and diverse weapons threw the danavas into terror.'
