संप्रादृश्यन्त संक्रुद्धा विवर्णवदनास् तथा ॥
युधिष्ठिराभिषेकं च वासुदेवस्य चार्हणम् ॥
अब्रुवंस् तत्र राजानो निर्वेदाद् आत्मनिश्चयात् ॥
सुहृद्भिर् वार्यमाणानां तेषां हि वपुर् आबभौ ॥
आमिषाद् अपकृष्टानां सिंहानाम् इव गर्जताम् ॥
tatrāhūtāgatāḥ sarve sunīthapramukhā gaṇāḥ ||
saṃprādṛśyanta saṃkruddhā vivarṇavadanās tathā ||
yudhiṣṭhirābhiṣekaṃ ca vāsudevasya cārhaṇam ||
abruvaṃs tatra rājāno nirvedād ātmaniścayāt ||
suhṛdbhir vāryamāṇānāṃ teṣāṃ hi vapur ābabhau ||
āmiṣād apakṛṣṭānāṃ siṃhānām iva garjatām ||
All the bands of kings gathered there, headed by Sunitha, appeared enraged, their faces pale. Out of resentment, by their own resolve, the kings there condemned both the consecration of Yudhishthira and the honoring of Vasudeva. And, held back by their friends, in appearance they were like lions dragged away from their prey, roaring.

The wrath of the envious bursts into the open: pale faces, murmuring, fury like that of lions torn from their prey. The comparison is telling — not to righteous indignation, but to predatory greed robbed of what it craved. Envy of the Lord's glory is akin to a beast's greed: it cannot bear that the honor went to another. The verse teaches how to recognize the nature of such anger — it is not zeal for the truth but wounded desire for preeminence. And just as a lion roars not over justice but over a snatched morsel, so the envious rage not over dharma but over the fact that another, not they, was exalted; their fury exposes self-interest, not principle.
