यः च दिष्टपरः लोके यः च अयम् हठवादकः उभौ अपसदाउ एतौ कर्मबुद्धिः प्रशस्यतेyaḥ ca diṣṭaparaḥ loke yaḥ ca ayam haṭhavādakaḥ ubhau apasadāu etau karmabuddhiḥ praśasyateHe who in this world relies solely on fate, and he who speaks only of chance — both are base; it is the understanding of action that is praised.
यः हि दिष्टम् उपासीनः निर्विचेष्टः सुखम् स्वपेत् अवसीदेत् सुदुर्बुद्धिः आमः घटः इव अम्भसिyaḥ hi diṣṭam upāsīnaḥ nirviceṣṭaḥ sukham svapet avasīdet sudurbuddhiḥ āmaḥ ghaṭaḥ iva ambhasiWhoever, resting on fate alone, would sleep peacefully without effort — this ill-thinking man would sink, like an unbaked pot in water.
तथा एव हठबुद्धिः यः शक्तः कर्मणि अकर्मकृत् आसीत न चिरम् जीवेत् अनाथः इव दुर्बलःtathā eva haṭhabuddhiḥ yaḥ śaktaḥ karmaṇi akarmakṛt āsīta na ciram jīvet anāthaḥ iva durbalaḥLikewise, one who clings to the idea of chance, though capable of action, yet does not act, would live but a short while, like a helpless man without a protector.
अकस्मात् अपि यः कः चित् अर्थम् प्राप्नोति पूरुषः तम् हठेन इति मन्यन्ते स हि यत्नः न कस्य चित्akasmāt api yaḥ kaḥ cit artham prāpnoti pūruṣaḥ tam haṭhena iti manyante sa hi yatnaḥ na kasya citIf someone attains an aim by accident, this is deemed chance, for it is no one's effort.
यत् च अपि किं चित् पुरुषः दिष्टम् नाम लभति उत दैवेन विधिना पार्थ तत् दैवम् इति निश्चितम्yat ca api kiṃ cit puruṣaḥ diṣṭam nāma labhati uta daivena vidhinā pārtha tat daivam iti niścitamWhat a man obtains as ordained by fate through divine ordinance, O Partha, is determined to be daiva (providence).
यत् स्वयम् कर्मणा किं चित् फलम् आप्नोति पूरुषः प्रत्यक्षम् चक्षुषा दृष्टम् तत् पौरुषम् इति स्मृतम्yat svayam karmaṇā kiṃ cit phalam āpnoti pūruṣaḥ pratyakṣam cakṣuṣā dṛṣṭam tat pauruṣam iti smṛtamWhat a man obtains himself through action, plainly seen by the eye, is called human effort (paurusha).
स्वभावतः प्रवृत्तः अन्यः प्राप्नोति अर्थान् अकारणात् तत् स्वभावात्मकम् विद्धि फलम् पुरुषसत्तमsvabhāvataḥ pravṛttaḥ anyaḥ prāpnoti arthān akāraṇāt tat svabhāvātmakam viddhi phalam puruṣasattamaAnother, acting by his own nature, attains ends without visible cause; know this as fruit whose foundation is nature itself, O best of men.
एवम् हठात् च दैवात् च स्वभावात् कर्मणः तथा यानि प्राप्नोति पुरुषः तत् फलम् पूर्वकर्मणःevam haṭhāt ca daivāt ca svabhāvāt karmaṇaḥ tathā yāni prāpnoti puruṣaḥ tat phalam pūrvakarmaṇaḥThus from chance, from fate, from nature, and from action, a man receives the fruits of prior karma.
धाता अपि हि स्वकर्म एव तैः तैः हेतुभिः ईश्वरः विदधाति विभज्य इह फलम् पूर्वकृतम् नृणाम्dhātā api hi svakarma eva taiḥ taiḥ hetubhiḥ īśvaraḥ vidadhāti vibhajya iha phalam pūrvakṛtam nṛṇāmAnd Dhatar, the Lord, precisely through these very causes, distributes here to men the fruit of former deeds.
यत् हि अयम् पुरुषः किं चित् कुरुते वै शुभ अशुभम् तत् धातृविहितम् विद्धि पूर्वकर्मफलोदयम्yat hi ayam puruṣaḥ kiṃ cit kurute vai śubha aśubham tat dhātṛvihitam viddhi pūrvakarmaphalodayamWhatever a man does, good or evil, know it as ordained by Dhatar — the rising up of the fruit of former karma.

Translation

‘He who relies on fate alone, and he who says all is mere chance, are both mistaken; it is the understanding of action that is praised. If a man, trusting in fate, sleeps without effort, he will sink like an unbaked pot in water. If a capable man, speaking of chance, fails to act, he will not live long, like one weak and without protection. Sometimes an aim arrives by chance; sometimes as fate through divine ordinance; sometimes through one's own effort; sometimes by nature. Yet all these fruits are bound to prior karma, which Dhatar distributes through various causes. The body becomes the instrument through which the great Lord impels beings to their tasks.’
