इष्टापूर्तफलम् न स्यात् न शिष्यः न गुरुः भवेत् पुरुषः कर्मसाध्येषु स्यात् चेत् अयम् अकारणम्iṣṭāpūrtaphalam na syāt na śiṣyaḥ na guruḥ bhavet puruṣaḥ karmasādhyeṣu syāt cet ayam akāraṇamThere would be no fruit of sacrifice and pious works, no disciple and no teacher, if man were not the cause in what is attainable through action.

Translation

‘A man first determines his aim with the mind, and then attains it through action. The success of homes and cities has man as its cause. Oil is in the sesame seed, milk in the cow, fire in the wood, but the wise man must find the means to draw them out. By its quality one sees whether a deed was done skillfully or not. If man were not the cause in what is attained through action, there would be no disciple and no teacher, no praise for success and no blame for failure. Some say all comes from chance, others from fate, others from effort; those who know the truth recognize three causes — daiva, chance, and one's own action — and there is no fourth. If prior karma had no influence, every action toward a desired aim would always bear fruit.’
