Vaishampayana said: "When the guardians of the world had gone, Partha began to think of the coming of the chariot of the king of the gods. While Gudakesha was pondering this, a great, radiant chariot arrived with Matali. It dispelled the darkness of the sky as though tearing apart the clouds, and filled the quarters with thunder. On it were swords, spears, maces, javelins, thunderbolts, terrible weapons of storm, fearsome serpents, and the Vaijayanta banner. Ten thousand green horses, swift as the wind, drew this divine chariot. Seeing the charioteer adorned with molten-gold ornaments, Arjuna thought that before him stood a god. Matali spoke respectfully: 'Son of Shakra, your father wishes to see you. Ascend the chariot of Indra; the gods, the sages, the gandharvas and the apsaras await you. By the command of Pakashasana, rise with me to the world of the gods; having obtained weapons, you shall return.'"

Matali comes not as a temptation of heaven but as a guide to further service. Arjuna will be raised above the earth so that he may return to it prepared.
