"When all the weapons had been quelled, I directed the Brahmastra. From the blazing arrows everything around began to grow with fire; the world was scorched by my heat, and in an instant the quarters of the sky and the heavens were lit up on every side. But the being of great splendor instantly shattered this weapon too. When the Brahmastra was struck down, great fear entered me. Then I again took up my bow and inexhaustible quivers and suddenly struck the being, but it devoured this weapon as well. When all the astras had been defeated and the weapons devoured, a hand-to-hand struggle began between me and that being. We fought with fists and open palms, and it felled me; I fell to the ground senseless. Then that wondrous being, laughing, vanished there together with the women. After this the blessed one abandoned the form of the Kirata and assumed another, divine form, clothed in a wondrous garment. Before me appeared Maheshvara himself — Govrishadhvaja, together with Uma, of many forms, wielder of the Pinaka. He approached me as I still stood facing him in battle, and said: 'I am pleased, scorcher of foes.' Then the blessed one took my bow and the two inexhaustible quivers, returned them to me, and said: 'Choose a boon. I am pleased with you, Kaunteya. Tell me, what shall I do for you? Whatever is in your mind, hero, that I will grant. Ask what you desire, save immortality.'"

Arjuna is defeated, but it is precisely this defeat that reveals Shiva to him. When the pride of weapons is broken, the gift comes not as a trophy, but as grace.
