गूढो दुर्योधनस् तत्र दर्शयाम् आस मातुलम् ॥
तं दृष्ट्वा मद्रराजस् तु ज्ञात्वा यत्नं च तस्य तम् ॥
परिष्वज्याब्रवीत् प्रीत इष्टो ऽर्थो गृह्यताम् इति ॥
दुर्योधन उवाच
सत्यवाग् भव कल्याण वरो वै मम दीयताम् ॥
सर्वसेनाप्रणेता मे भवान् भवितुम् अर्हति ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
कृतम् इत्य् अब्रवीच् छल्यः किम् अन्यत् क्रियताम् इति ॥
कृतम् इत्य् एव गान्धारिः प्रत्युवाच पुनः पुनः ॥
स तथा शल्यम् आमन्त्र्य पुनर् आयात् स्वकं पुरम् ॥
शल्यो जगाम कौन्तेयान् आख्यातुं कर्म तस्य तत् ॥
उपप्लव्यं स गत्वा तु स्कन्धावारं प्रविश्य च ॥
पाण्डवान् अथ तान् सर्वाञ् शल्यस् तत्र ददर्श ह ॥

duryodhana uvāca
satyavāg bhava kalyāṇa varo vai mama dīyatām ||
sarvasenāpraṇetā me bhavān bhavitum arhati ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
kṛtam ity abravīc chalyaḥ kim anyat kriyatām iti ||
kṛtam ity eva gāndhāriḥ pratyuvāca punaḥ punaḥ ||
sa tathā śalyam āmantrya punar āyāt svakaṃ puram ||
śalyo jagāma kaunteyān ākhyātuṃ karma tasya tat ||
upaplavyaṃ sa gatvā tu skandhāvāraṃ praviśya ca ||
pāṇḍavān atha tān sarvāñ śalyas tatra dadarśa ha ||
And the king of the Madras, seeing him and understanding his effort, embraced him. And Shalya embraced Duryodhana and said: "Take what you may desire." Duryodhana then said: "O auspicious one, let your word be truth — grant me a boon. I ask you to be the leader of my entire army." Vaishampayana continued: "And, hearing this, Shalya said: So be it! What else is to be done? And the son of Gandhari repeated again and again: It is accomplished. And Shalya said: O Duryodhana, best of men, go to your city. I intend to visit Yudhishthira, the conqueror of foes. O king, I shall return soon, O ruler of men. I must by all means visit that best of men, the son of Pandu, Yudhishthira." And, hearing this, Duryodhana said: "O king, O ruler of the earth, having seen the Pandava, return quickly. I place my complete trust in you, O king of kings. Remember the favor you have granted me." And Shalya replied: "Well for you! I shall return soon. Go back to your city, O protector of the people."
