संजय उवाच
प्रतिज्ञाते तु पार्थेन सिन्धुराजवधे तदा ॥
वासुदेवो महाबाहुर् धनंजयम् अभाषत ॥
भ्रातॄणां मतम् आज्ञाय त्वया वाचा प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥
सैन्धवं श्वो ऽस्मि हन्तेति तत् साहसतमं कृतम् ॥
असंमन्त्र्य मया सार्धम् अतिभारो ऽयम् उद्यतः ॥
कथं नु सर्वलोकस्य नावहास्या भवेमहि ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
pratijñāte tu pārthena sindhurājavadhe tadā ||
vāsudevo mahābāhur dhanaṃjayam abhāṣata ||
bhrātṝṇāṃ matam ājñāya tvayā vācā pratiśrutam ||
saindhavaṃ śvo 'smi hanteti tat sāhasatamaṃ kṛtam ||
asaṃmantrya mayā sārdham atibhāro 'yam udyataḥ ||
kathaṃ nu sarvalokasya nāvahāsyā bhavemahi ||
When Partha had made the vow to kill the king of Sindhu, mighty-armed Vasudeva said to Dhananjaya: "Taking in the thought of your brothers, you promised in words: 'Tomorrow I shall strike down the Sindhian.' This was done most rashly, without conferring with me: an immense burden has been taken up. How shall we not become a laughingstock before all the world?"

Krishna himself calls the vow "sāhasatamam", "most rash", and reproaches: "asaṃmantrya mayā sārdham", "without conferring with me." This is not doubt about the outcome, but a lesson: even righteous resolve must be measured against the Lord's will, not made alone, in a surge of grief. It is significant that the Friend and Charioteer does not disown the vow, but takes upon Himself the care of its fulfillment, while rebuking the haste. The verse teaches that a great undertaking must be entrusted to God before it is proclaimed: resolve without counsel from above is not valor but risk, and it is saved only by the fact that the Lord accepts it as His own.
