किं नु संजय संग्रामे वृत्तं दुर्योधनं प्रति ॥
परिदेवो महान् अत्र श्रुतो मे नाभिनन्दनम् ॥
बभूवुर् ये मनोग्राह्याः शब्दाः श्रुतिसुखावहाः ॥
न श्रूयन्ते ऽद्य ते सर्वे सैन्धवस्य निवेशने ॥

kiṃ nu saṃjaya saṃgrāme vṛttaṃ duryodhanaṃ prati ||
paridevo mahān atra śruto me nābhinandanam ||
babhūvur ye manogrāhyāḥ śabdāḥ śrutisukhāvahāḥ ||
na śrūyante 'dya te sarve saindhavasya niveśane ||

Translation
"What then, O Sanjaya, happened in the battle to Duryodhana? Great lamentation I hear here, not rejoicing. Those sounds that once were pleasing to the mind, delightful to the ear — none of them are heard now in the camp of the Sindhu king."

The king reads disaster in the silence: 'paridevo mahān… na abhinandanam,' 'great lamentation, not rejoicing.' Where once sounded 'śrutisukhāvahāḥ śabdāḥ,' sounds delighting the ear, now there is muteness. It is telling that the absence of accustomed joy becomes news louder than any report. The verse teaches that a change of fortune is most surely betrayed by silenced festivity: where triumph has given way to weeping, disaster has already occurred; and an attentive heart recognizes misfortune by the silence where joy once was.
