नियुज्यमानाः स्थास्यन्ति पाण्डवा धर्मवर्त्मनि ॥
सन्ति नो ज्ञातयस् तात येषां श्रोष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥
शल्यस्य सोमदत्तस्य भीष्मस्य च महात्मनः ॥
द्रोणस्याथ विकर्णस्य बाह्लिकस्य कृपस्य च ॥
अन्येषां चैव वृद्धानां भरतानां महात्मनाम् ॥
त्वदर्थं ब्रुवतां तात करिष्यन्ति वचो हितम् ॥
niyujyamānāḥ sthāsyanti pāṇḍavā dharmavartmani ||
santi no jñātayas tāta yeṣāṃ śroṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ||
śalyasya somadattasya bhīṣmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ||
droṇasyātha vikarṇasya bāhlikasya kṛpasya ca ||
anyeṣāṃ caiva vṛddhānāṃ bharatānāṃ mahātmanām ||
tvadarthaṃ bruvatāṃ tāta kariṣyanti vaco hitam ||
"If called upon, the Pandavas will stand firm on the path of dharma. We have kinsmen, dear one, whom the Pandavas will heed: Shalya, Somadatta, great Bhishma, then Drona, Vikarna, Bahlika and Kripa, and other elders, great Bharatas, who speak for your sake, dear one — their good word they will carry out."

Dhritarashtra trusts the Pandavas' openness to dharma: "niyujyamānāḥ sthāsyanti… dharmavartmani" — called upon, they will stand firm in righteousness and heed their elders. This is a true assessment — and so all the more bitter for the path left untaken. It is telling that peace was possible, for the righteous incline toward reconciliation. The verse teaches that the readiness of the righteous to listen for the sake of dharma is a precious opportunity for peace; and heavy is the guilt of one who, knowing the other side's readiness, still failed to use it, letting slip a path opened by the very goodness of the opponent.
