ततः शरीरे रामस्य वासुदेवस्य चोभयोः ॥
अन्विष्य दाहयाम् आस पुरुषैर् आप्तकारिभिः ॥
स तेषां विधिवत् कृत्वा प्रेतकार्याणि पाण्डवः ॥
सप्तमे दिवसे प्रायाद् रथम् आरुह्य सत्वरः ॥
अश्वयुक्तै रथैश् चापि गोखरोष्ट्रयुतैर् अपि ॥
स्त्रियस् ता वृष्णिवीराणां रुदत्यः शोककर्शिताः ॥
अनुजग्मुर् महात्मानं पाण्डुपुत्रं धनंजयम् ॥
भृत्यास् त्व् अन्धकवृष्णीनां सादिनो रथिनश् च ये ॥
वीरहीनं वृद्धबालं पौरजानपदास् तथा ॥
ययुस् ते परिवार्याथ कलत्रं पार्थशासनात् ॥
कुञ्जरैश् च गजारोहा ययुः शैलनिभैस् तथा ॥
सपादरक्षैः संयुक्ताः सोत्तरायुधिका ययुः ॥
tataḥ śarīre rāmasya vāsudevasya cobhayoḥ ||
anviṣya dāhayām āsa puruṣair āptakāribhiḥ ||
sa teṣāṃ vidhivat kṛtvā pretakāryāṇi pāṇḍavaḥ ||
saptame divase prāyād ratham āruhya satvaraḥ ||
aśvayuktai rathaiś cāpi gokharoṣṭrayutair api ||
striyas tā vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṃ rudatyaḥ śokakarśitāḥ ||
anujagmur mahātmānaṃ pāṇḍuputraṃ dhanaṃjayam ||
bhṛtyās tv andhakavṛṣṇīnāṃ sādino rathinaś ca ye ||
vīrahīnaṃ vṛddhabālaṃ paurajānapadās tathā ||
yayus te parivāryātha kalatraṃ pārthaśāsanāt ||
kuñjaraiś ca gajārohā yayuḥ śailanibhais tathā ||
sapādarakṣaiḥ saṃyuktāḥ sottarāyudhikā yayuḥ ||
Then he, that lord of Dwaraka, sought out the bodies of both Rama and Vasudeva and had them cremated by trustworthy men. Covering them with divine sandalwood and adorned garlands, Arjuna performed the rite as he would for his own fathers.

Arjuna discharges the last duty even before the bodies of Rama and Vasudeva himself. 'As for his own fathers' — this is no mere figure of speech: Arjuna regarded them as fathers, for Krishna had been throughout his life his elder friend, guide, and refuge. This rite is an expression of the highest love and gratitude.
