Uttanka embodies here the ideal of the disciple who refuses to leave in debt: he insistently asks leave to bring the guru-dakṣiṇā, the fee to the teacher without which discipleship is not complete according to dharma. This is no mere formality but an expression of grateful love: the devoted disciple longs to repay, however partially, the priceless gift of knowledge, knowing full well that it can never be repaid in full. The principle he voices — that one who speaks or asks wrongly brings ruin and enmity upon himself — points to the sanctity of the bond between teacher and disciple, where everything must be conducted in truth. The task set by the guru's wife, seemingly difficult, becomes for Uttanka a path of service: true devotion does not choose easy tasks for itself but readily takes up the impossible for the sake of the guru. Thus the tradition teaches that the guru-dakṣiṇā is a sacred duty, and that fulfilling the teacher's will, however hard it may be, is the highest form of worship.
