“Once the mountain Kolahala, being sentient, out of desire dammed the river Shuktimati that flowed near his city. But Vasu struck that mountain Kolahala with his foot, and through the breach made by the blow the river came forth, set free. And the mountain himself begot a twin pair in that river; and grateful for her release, the river presented the two of them to the king. The one who was male, the king, the bestower of wealth, made commander of the army, a subduer of foes; and the girl he made his beloved wife, named Girika. Vasu's wife Girika, having bathed and become pure by rite, in due time announced to the king the arrival of the season of conception. But that very day the ancestors, the pitris, delighted, said to that best and wisest of kings, ‘Slay us deer.’ And that king, not transgressing the command of the ancestors, but remembering only Girika, exceedingly beautiful, as if she were in very presence a second Shri, overcome with desire, wandered on the hunt. As he wandered through the lovely forest, his seed spilled forth; and that seed, the very moment it fell, the king caught upon a leaf of a tree, thinking: ‘Let not my seed fall in vain, and let not my wife's season of conception be fruitless’ — so the lord reflected.”
