Traducción

Satyavati, having obtained the incomparable boon, joyful, united with Parashara, at once conceived and gave birth; and that mighty son of Parashara was born on an island of the river Yamuna. Having honored his mother, he turned his mind to austerity and said: 'When remembered by you in need, I shall appear in your affairs.' Thus Dvaipayana was born to Satyavati by Parashara. And since as an infant he was left on the island (dvipa), hence he came to be called Dvaipayana. That wise one, seeing dharma diminish by a foot with each yuga, and seeing how from yuga to yuga the lifespan and strength of mortals diminish — for the sake of grace toward Brahman and the brahmanas divided the single Veda into parts; hence he is remembered as Vyasa (the Divider). The lord, the best of sages, the giver of boons, taught the Vedas — with the Mahabharata as the fifth Veda — to Sumantu, Jaimini, Paila, his own son Shuka, and also Vaishampayana; and by them the compilations (samhitas) of the Bharata were published separately.
