तापत्य इति यद् वाक्यम् उक्तवान् असि माम् इह ॥
तद् अहं ज्ञातुम् इच्छामि तापत्यार्थविनिश्चयम् ॥
तपती नाम का चैषा तापत्या यत्कृते वयम् ॥
कौन्तेया हि वयं साधो तत्त्वम् इच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥

Traducción
Arjuna said: «"Tāpatya" — that is the word you spoke to me here — I wish to know its exact meaning. And who is this Tapati, for whose sake we are called Tāpatyas? For we are the sons of Kunti, O virtuous one; I wish to know the truth».

Here Arjuna seeks the origin of his own name — and with it, the origin of his lineage. It is telling that he lets no word pass unremarked, however small, but wishes to know its "exact meaning": an inquiring mind values truth even in a name. This is a commendable curiosity, turned toward the tradition of the forefathers. Thus the scripture shows that a question about the origin of a name opens onto an ancient tale; and from Arjuna's curiosity is born the story of Tapati.
