Here attraction turns into burning torment. It is telling that the joy of beholding is at once replaced by "turmoil" and burning: passion, no sooner kindled, torments, for it desires possession. Here the nature of kama is laid bare: it does not satisfy but scorches, turning beauty into a source of anguish. Telling too is the contrast — "the bold one spoke to the timid one": one burning with passion forgets courteous restraint. Thus the scripture shows how infatuation disturbs peace and drives one to speech; and Samvarana, master of himself until then, is overcome by the fire of Manmatha.
