«Surya, who in heaven fills the firmament with radiance from his seat, had an incomparable daughter named Tapati, the younger sister of Savitri, O Kaunteya, renowned in the three worlds, endowed with austerity. No one was of such beauty — neither goddess, nor asuri, nor yakshi, nor rakshasi, nor apsara, nor gandharvi; with a well-proportioned, flawless body, dark-eyed, of good conduct, virtuous, and a beautifully adorned lovely woman».

Here a maiden reveals herself, lovely both in beauty and in character. It is telling that the scripture praises not only Tapati's appearance but also that she is "of good conduct, virtuous" and "endowed with austerity": true beauty is joined to purity and tapas. In this one sees that outer beauty, crowned with virtue, is truly worthy; beauty without character is empty. Thus the scripture presents the image of a perfect maiden — the daughter of the sun, in whom loveliness and holiness are fused as one.
