Here the brother presents the assembled suitors to the maiden. It is significant that Dhrishtadyumna lists them "by name, lineage, and deeds": the bride must know who stands before her, so that her choice may be an informed one. Here is respect for the maiden's will: nothing is imposed on her; the worthy are simply made known to her, so that the choice may be free and reasoned. The text thus reveals the noble custom of the svayamvara; and the roll call of kings prepares for that for which all have gathered -- the choosing of a husband.
