तस्य चित्राङ्गदा नाम दुहिता चारुदर्शना ॥
तां ददर्श पुरे तस्मिन् विचरन्तीं यदृच्छया ॥
दृष्ट्वा च तां वरारोहां चकमे चैत्रवाहिनीम् ॥
अभिगम्य च राजानं ज्ञापयत् स्वं प्रयोजनम् ॥
तम् उवाचाथ राजा स सान्त्वपूर्वम् इदं वचः ॥
tasya citrāṅgadā nāma duhitā cārudarśanā ||
tāṃ dadarśa pure tasmin vicarantīṃ yadṛcchayā ||
dṛṣṭvā ca tāṃ varārohāṃ cakame caitravāhinīm ||
abhigamya ca rājānaṃ jñāpayat svaṃ prayojanam ||
tam uvācātha rājā sa sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ ||
"He had a daughter named Chitrangada, lovely to behold; he saw her in that city, wandering by chance; and having seen that fair-hipped one, he desired the daughter of Chitravahana; and having come to the king, he made known his intention; and that king spoke kindly to him this word."

Here desire is expressed honestly -- by petition to the father. It is significant that Arjuna, though smitten, neither abducts nor acts willfully, but goes to the king and reveals his intention: the noble man seeks a bride through worthy courtship. Attraction, too, must be clothed in the dharma of marriage. Thus scripture shows Arjuna's courtesy; and from an honest petition a lawful union will be born.
