Here the anger of the righteous gives way to mercy. It is significant that the brahmin, unyielding before temptation, proves responsive to repentance: one who is firm against sin is gentle toward the penitent. True holiness unites strictness with compassion. Thus the scripture reveals the mercy of the ascetic; and the curse is softened by forgiveness.
