अयम् अग्निर् दहन् कक्षम् इत आयाति भीषणः ॥
जगत् संदीपयन् भीमो मम दुःखविवर्धनः ॥
इमे च मां कर्षयन्ति शिशवो मन्दचेतसः ॥
अबर्हाश् चरणैर् हीनाः पूर्वेषां नः परायणम् ॥
त्रासयंश् चायम् आयाति लेलिहानो महीरुहान् ॥
ayam agnir dahan kakṣam ita āyāti bhīṣaṇaḥ ||
jagat saṃdīpayan bhīmo mama duḥkhavivardhanaḥ ||
ime ca māṃ karṣayanti śiśavo mandacetasaḥ ||
abarhāś caraṇair hīnāḥ pūrveṣāṃ naḥ parāyaṇam ||
trāsayaṃś cāyam āyāti lelihāno mahīruhān ||
Jarita said: "Here comes the fire, burning the thicket, terrible, setting the world ablaze, fearsome, increaser of my grief; and these infants torment me, witless, featherless, without the use of their feet, they are the hope of our ancestors; and terrifying all, the fire comes, licking the trees."

Here the helplessness of the children doubles the mother's sorrow. It is telling that the fledglings are "featherless and footless" — able neither to fly nor to run: their defenselessness wounds the mother twice over. Telling too is the phrase "hope of the ancestors": in them lies the continuation of the lineage. Here the full value of children as heirs of the family line is seen. Thus the scripture reveals Jarita's twofold anxiety — for the lives of her children and for the lineage.
