मन्दपाल उवाच
युष्माकं परिरक्षार्थं विज्ञप्तो ज्वलनो मया ॥
अग्निना च तथेत्य् एवं पूर्वम् एव प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥
अग्नेर् वचनम् आज्ञाय मातुर् धर्मज्ञतां च वः ॥
युष्माकं च परं वीर्यं नाहं पूर्वम् इहागतः ॥
न संतापो हि वः कार्यः पुत्रका मरणं प्रति ॥
ऋषीन् वेद हुताशो ऽपि ब्रह्म तद् विदितं च वः ॥
mandapāla uvāca
yuṣmākaṃ parirakṣārthaṃ vijñapto jvalano mayā ||
agninā ca tathety evaṃ pūrvam eva pratiśrutam ||
agner vacanam ājñāya mātur dharmajñatāṃ ca vaḥ ||
yuṣmākaṃ ca paraṃ vīryaṃ nāhaṃ pūrvam ihāgataḥ ||
na saṃtāpo hi vaḥ kāryaḥ putrakā maraṇaṃ prati ||
ṛṣīn veda hutāśo 'pi brahma tad viditaṃ ca vaḥ ||
Mandapala said: "For your protection I entreated the fire, and Agni, likewise, promised beforehand, 'so be it'; knowing Agni's word, and your mother's righteousness, and your own supreme valour, I did not come here sooner. You need not grieve, my sons, over death: the fire knows the sages, and that sacred Brahman is known to you too."

Here the father discloses the reason for his seeming negligence and consoles his sons with knowledge. It is significant that he kept his distance, trusting in Agni's word, his wife's righteousness, and his sons' valour; and that his consolation lies in knowledge: 'do not grieve over death, for Brahman is known to you.' Here knowledge of the Supreme overcomes the fear of death. Thus scripture presents Mandapala's instruction; and with it the tale of the Sharngakas concludes.
