ततो ऽन्तरिक्षाद् भगवान् अवतीर्य सुरेश्वरः ॥
मरुद्गणवृतः पार्थं माधवं चाब्रवीद् इदम् ॥
कृतं युवाभ्यां कर्मेदम् अमरैर् अपि दुष्करम् ॥
वरान् वृणीतं तुष्टो ऽस्मि दुर्लभान् अप्य् अमानुषान् ॥
tato 'ntarikṣād bhagavān avatīrya sureśvaraḥ ||
marudgaṇavṛtaḥ pārthaṃ mādhavaṃ cābravīd idam ||
kṛtaṃ yuvābhyāṃ karmedam amarair api duṣkaram ||
varān vṛṇītaṃ tuṣṭo 'smi durlabhān apy amānuṣān ||
Vaishampayana said: "Then from the sky descended the blessed lord of the gods, Indra, surrounded by the host of Maruts, and said this to Partha and Madhava: 'A deed has been done by you two, difficult even for the immortals; choose boons — I am pleased — though they be hard to attain, beyond human reach.'"

Here the very king of the gods acknowledges the greatness of what has been done. It is significant that Indra, who earlier hindered the fire with rain, now descends to praise and reward: true greatness in the end bends even its opponents. Thus it is disclosed that the feat of Nara and Narayana surpasses the deeds of the immortals. Thus scripture shows Indra's descent; and he offers boons to both.
