विन्दानुविन्दाव् आवन्त्यौ सैन्येन महता वृतौ ॥

पाण्डवः परवीरघ्नः सहदेवः प्रतापवान् ॥
ततो ऽस्य सुमहद् युद्धम् आसीद् भीरुभयंकरम् ॥

The mighty son of the Ashvins conquered in battle the Avantya heroes Vinda and Anuvinda, surrounded by a great army. Then, taking the jewels, he went to the city of Mahishmati; there the bull among men, the Pandava, slayer of enemy heroes, mighty Sahadeva, waged battle with King Nila. Until now Sahadeva’s campaign had gone from victory to victory; but at Mahishmati a ‘very great battle, terrifying to the timid’ begins. It is significant that even the path of the righteous is not always smooth: after a succession of easy conquests awaits a trial in which ordinary might will prove powerless. The verse prepares for an encounter with an obstacle of another kind — not with a king, but with a god. The teaching is that reliance on one’s own strength suffices only up to a point; there are barriers before which all valor must give way to humility, for they are overcome not by weapons.
