Having come to Bharukaccha, the wise son of Madravati sent envoys, O lord of kings, to the magnanimous Paulastya [Vibhishana]. And he, the wise lord, accepted his command with love and agreed to that which had been ordained by time. Then he sent various jewels — sandalwood and aloe chief among the gifts, wondrous ornaments, precious garments, and gems of great worth; and then the wise, mighty Sahadeva turned back.

Vibhishana, the righteous brother of Ravana who outlived Lanka, accepts the will of the Pandavas 'with love,' for he 'agreed to that which was ordained by time' (kalakrta). This submission of the wise man before the will of the ages is significant: he does not resist, discerning in the demand not another's self-interest but the movement of a higher order. The verse teaches that the discerning man perceives the hand of fate in events and does not strive against it; submission not out of weakness but out of knowledge — the highest maturity. Whoever sees what time is doing accepts what is due with peace in his heart, turning the inevitable into the voluntary.
