Sahadeva, righteous, seeing the army tormented by fear and engulfed in fire, remained unshaken, like a mountain. Having performed achamana and become pure, he said to Pavaka: “For your sake is this undertaking, O Krishnavartman; homage be to you! You are the mouth of the gods, you are the very sacrifice, O Pavaka; from purifying you are called Pavaka, from bearing sacrifices, Havyavahana. The Vedas were born for your sake, therefore you are Jataveda; it is not fitting for you, O Havyavahana, to create this obstruction to the sacrifice”.

Sahadeva does not answer fire with fire — he answers with a bow and with praise, reciting the god’s names and their meaning: Pavaka, the purifier; Havyavahana, the bearer of sacrifices; Jataveda, he for whom the Vedas were born. It is significant that the warrior disarms the deity not by force but by knowledge of his essence: to name the Lord, having grasped the meaning of the name, is itself worship. And his argument is irresistible: ‘for your sake is this undertaking’ — the sacrifice that Agni obstructs is performed for Agni himself. The verse teaches that before the divine it is not resistance but recognition that prevails; and whoever remembers whom and for what he serves finds the word that reconciles even the wrath of gods.
