तम् अभ्येत्य शनैर् वह्निर्tam abhyetya śanair vahnirapproaching him quietly, the fire
उवाच कुरु-नन्दनम्uvāca kuru-nandanamsaid to the descendant of Kuru,
सहदेवं नृणां देवंsahadevaṃ nṛṇāṃ devaṃto Sahadeva, the god among men,
सान्त्व-पूर्वम् इदं वचःsāntva-pūrvam idaṃ vacaḥgently spoke these words:
उत्तिष्ठ उत्तिष्ठ कौरव्यuttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha kauravya"Rise, rise, Kauravya;
जिज्ञासा इयं कृता मयाjijñāsā iyaṃ kṛtā mayāthis was a trial performed by me;
वेद्मि सर्वम् अभिप्रायंvedmi sarvam abhiprāyaṃI know the entire intention
तव धर्म-सुतस्य चtava dharma-sutasya caof yours and of the son of Dharma;
मया तु रक्षितव्या इयंmayā tu rakṣitavyā iyaṃbut I must protect
पुरी भरत-सत्तमpurī bharata-sattamathis city, O best of the Bharatas,
यावद् राज्ञो अस्य नीलस्यyāvad rājño asya nīlasyaas long as of this king Nila

The true nature of what happened is revealed: it was a 'jijnasa' — a test, not enmity. It is significant that the god speaks 'gently' and raises up the one who had prayed: the terrible countenance was testing, not punishing. So too the Lord often shows severity in order to probe the heart of His own: the fire that seemed like doom turns out to be a measure of faithfulness. And Agni himself remains true to his own vow — to protect the city for the sake of a word once given. The verse teaches that a trial is a sign of attention from above, not of rejection; and that faithfulness to a promise binds even the gods — a word once given must be kept until the end of the lineage.
