धार्तराष्ट्रस्य शिबिरे मया प्रणिहिताश् चराः ॥
त इमे शीघ्रम् आगम्य प्रवृत्तिं वेदयन्ति नः ॥
त्वया वै संप्रतिज्ञाते सिन्धुराजवधे तदा ॥
सिंहनादः सवादित्रः सुमहान् इह तैः श्रुतः ॥
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ता धार्तराष्ट्राः ससैन्धवाः ॥
नाकस्मात् सिंहनादो ऽयम् इति मत्वा व्यवस्थिताः ॥
dhārtarāṣṭrasya śibire mayā praṇihitāś carāḥ ||
ta ime śīghram āgamya pravṛttiṃ vedayanti naḥ ||
tvayā vai saṃpratijñāte sindhurājavadhe tadā ||
siṃhanādaḥ savāditraḥ sumahān iha taiḥ śrutaḥ ||
tena śabdena vitrastā dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ sasaindhavāḥ ||
nākasmāt siṃhanādo 'yam iti matvā vyavasthitāḥ ||
"I have sent spies into the camp of the son of Dhritarashtra; they, having swiftly returned, bring us news. When you gave your vow to kill the king of Sindhu, a most great lion's roar with the thunder of orchestras was heard there by them. Terrified by that din, the sons of Dhritarashtra together with the Sindhian, reasoning, 'Not for nothing is this lion's roar,' stood on guard."

Krishna the commander acts not on impulse alone but with reason: "mayā praṇihitāḥ cārāḥ", "spies were sent by me." Knowledge of the enemy is part of righteous war. Here too is explained the rebuke for haste: the exultant roar betrayed the secret, and the enemy "vyavasthitāḥ", made ready. It is significant that the Lord, whose will decides the outcome, does not neglect earthly means — reconnaissance, calculation. The verse teaches that trust in God does not abolish sober action: even where the outcome is assured from above, one must know the enemy in a human way and not reveal one's design before the time.
