न पाण्डवानां शिबिरे कश् चित् सुष्वाप तां निशाम् ॥
प्रजागरः सर्वजनम् आविवेश विशां पते ॥
पुत्रशोकाभिभूतेन प्रतिज्ञातो महात्मना ॥
सहसा सिन्धुराजस्य वधो गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥
तत् कथं नु महाबाहुर् वासविः परवीरहा ॥
प्रतिज्ञां सफलां कुर्याद् इति ते समचिन्तयन् ॥
na pāṇḍavānāṃ śibire kaś cit suṣvāpa tāṃ niśām ||
prajāgaraḥ sarvajanam āviveśa viśāṃ pate ||
putraśokābhibhūtena pratijñāto mahātmanā ||
sahasā sindhurājasya vadho gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ||
tat kathaṃ nu mahābāhur vāsaviḥ paravīrahā ||
pratijñāṃ saphalāṃ kuryād iti te samacintayan ||
In the camp of the Pandavas no one slept that night: sleeplessness, O lord of the people, seized them all. Stricken with grief for his son, the great-souled wielder of Gandiva had suddenly made a vow to slay the king of Sindhu. "How will the mighty-armed son of Vasava, slayer of enemy heroes, fulfil the vow?" — thus they pondered.

It is not one family that lies sleepless, but the whole camp: "prajāgaraḥ sarvajanam āviveśa." Arjuna's vow has become the concern of all, for upon it rests the fate of the common cause. "Sahasā... pratijñātaḥ," "suddenly made" — again echoes the note of haste. The anxiety is not for themselves but for whether the beloved leader's word can be fulfilled. It is telling that love for Arjuna turns his vow into a shared, sleepless prayer. The verse teaches that the word of a righteous leader binds the fates of many to him: his vow is no longer a private matter but the burden and hope of a whole people, sharing with him a sleepless night.
