"He rejected the Dasharha, the bull among all archers, who spoke words of reconciliation; led astray, he did not follow him. Then he followed the counsel of the two — Duhshasana and Karna — abandoning me, dragged along by Time, evil-minded."

'Kṛṣṭaḥ kālena durmatiḥ,' 'dragged by Time, evil-minded' — Dhritarashtra sees in his son's obstinacy both fate and the son's own guilt. To reject 'anuneyāni jalpantam' Krishna, who spoke words of reconciliation, and to heed Karna and Duhshasana instead — this was a choice of ruin. It is telling that the father calls this 'hitvā mām,' 'abandoning me': good counsel was given, but without the force to insist upon it. The verse teaches that ruin comes when a man rejects the voice of peace and of God for the sake of flattering counselors of passion; and a feeble good word, unbacked by will, does not save one from a fatal choice.
