व्यजानत यदा तु त्वां राजधर्माद् अधश् च्युतम् ॥
तदा प्रभृति कृष्णस् त्वां न तथा बहु मन्यते ॥
परुषाण्य् उच्यमानांश् च यथा पार्थान् उपेक्षसे ॥
तस्यानुबन्धः प्राप्तस् त्वां पुत्राणां राज्यकामुकम् ॥

"When he recognized you as fallen below the royal duty, from that time Krishna has not esteemed you so highly. And when harsh things were said to the Parthas, and you paid it no heed — that consequence has overtaken you, craving a kingdom for your sons."

The loss of the Lord's regard has a cause: "rājadharmāt adhaḥ cyutam," "fallen below the royal duty." Krishna esteems by dharma, not by rank. And "upekṣase," "you left it without notice" — the reviling of the Pandavas, tolerating evil is complicity, and "anubandhaḥ prāptaḥ," the consequence has overtaken him. It is telling that the Lord's regard is not lost all at once, but with the fall from duty. The verse teaches that the Lord measures a person by faithfulness to dharma, not by station; and whoever silently tolerates wrong done to the innocent for his own gain brings the consequence upon himself — and loses the favor of God.
