तेषां तत् तादृशं कर्म त्वाम् आसाद्य सुनिष्फलम् ॥
यत् पित्र्याद् भ्रंशिता राज्यात् त्वयेहामिषगृद्धिना ॥
यत् पुनर् युद्धकाले त्वं पुत्रान् गर्हयसे नृप ॥
बहुधा व्याहरन् दोषान् न तद् अद्योपपद्यते ॥
teṣāṃ tat tādṛśaṃ karma tvām āsādya suniṣphalam ||
yat pitryād bhraṃśitā rājyāt tvayehāmiṣagṛddhinā ||
yat punar yuddhakāle tvaṃ putrān garhayase nṛpa ||
bahudhā vyāharan doṣān na tad adyopapadyate ||
"That deed of theirs, such as it was, having reached you, became utterly fruitless — for they were cast down from their paternal kingdom by you here, greedy for the morsel. And that, again, in the time of war, you revile [your] sons, O king, proclaiming manifold faults — that now does not befit you."

Sanjaya denounces belated blame: "yuddhakāle… putrān garhayase… na tat adya upapadyate," "to revile your sons in the time of war — that now does not befit you." The time to reproach was earlier, not now. And the root of it all is named directly: "āmiṣagṛddhinā," "greedy for the morsel" — greed took the kingdom from the righteous. It is telling that the blame is placed on Dhritarashtra himself, not on the sons alone. The verse teaches that late reproach is only a way of shifting one's own guilt: whoever, driven by greed, steered the course toward calamity, has no right now to blame the instruments of his own will; the responsibility rests with the one who held the power and craved.
