तं द्रोणः पञ्चविंशत्या मर्मभिद्भिर् अजिह्मगैः ॥
अन्तेवासिनम् आचार्यो महेष्वासं समर्दयत् ॥
तं तूर्णम् इव बीभत्सुः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥
अभ्यधावद् इषून् अस्यन्न् इषुवेगविघातकान् ॥
तस्याशु क्षिपतो भल्लान् भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
प्रत्यविध्यद् अमेयात्मा ब्रह्मास्त्रं समुदीरयन् ॥

antevāsinam ācāryo maheṣvāsaṃ samardayat ||
taṃ tūrṇam iva bībhatsuḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
abhyadhāvad iṣūn asyann iṣuvegavighātakān ||
tasyāśu kṣipato bhallān bhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
pratyavidhyad ameyātmā brahmāstraṃ samudīrayan ||
Drona, the teacher, pressed his pupil, the great archer, with twenty-five straight arrows piercing vital points. Him Bibhatsu, best of all who bear weapons, swiftly [met], loosing arrows that beat back the force of arrows. Him, swiftly hurling bhallas, Arjuna, boundless in spirit, pierced back with bhallas of smooth joints, raising up the weapon of Brahma.

The duel of guru and disciple reaches its height: both wield the "brahmāstra," the weapon of Brahma. "Antevāsinam ācāryaḥ," "his pupil -- the teacher," the poet does not let us forget their bond even in this exchange of the highest weapon. Telling is that the battle is waged not by hatred but by equal skill. The verse teaches that the meeting of two masters — even on opposing sides — reveals the greatness of knowledge: teacher and pupil, turning the highest weapon upon each other, testify to the fullness of what was transmitted and what was learned. Their duel is not enmity but the summit of mastery contending with itself.
