Both camps put forward their best: the Pandavas — Dhrishtadyumna, the Kauravas — Drona. The battle takes shape around the clash of two champions. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna, born for Drona's death, leads the charge against him: fate has brought them face to face. The verse teaches that in a great confrontation those destined for one another are drawn together: fate sets against the teacher the one appointed to slay him; and the battle of two champions is no accident but the weaving together of threads already spun by destiny.
