यथा देवासुरे युद्धे पुरा पूषा स्म शोभते ॥

"The boar of the king of Sindhu, silver, brightly shines on the crest — hued like an unblazing sun, decked with a golden net. With that silver banner Jayadratha shone, as in the battle of the gods and asuras Pushan shone of old."

Jayadratha's banner is a silver boar, shining like Pushan in the ancient war of gods against asuras. But it was Pushan who, in that very strife, lost his teeth: the brilliance of the banner shades one destined to fall. It is telling that the beauty of a standard does not ward off but seems rather to foreshadow the bearer's fate. The verse teaches that outward brilliance is no pledge of triumph, and the one whose banner burns brightest over the field may be the first to be doomed — for fate is decided not by brilliance but by the rightness of one's cause.
