These nine raised superior banners in your army illuminated [your] host, resembling suns at the end of an age. The tenth, however, belonged to Arjuna — one alone, the great monkey — by which Arjuna shone, like Himavan by fire.

The nine banners of the Kauravas are yugāntādityasaṃnibhāḥ, like suns at the end of an age: a fearsome image, yet also one foretelling an end. Against them stands the single banner of Arjuna — eka eva mahākapiḥ, the one great monkey, Hanuman. It is telling that against nine luminaries of falsehood, one sign of devotion suffices for Arjuna to blaze forth, himavān iva vahninā, like the Himalayas in fire. The verse teaches that the single thing overshadowed by service to the Lord outweighs the many, however fearsomely they may shine.
