ततश् चित्राणि शुभ्राणि सुमहान्ति महारथाः ॥
कार्मुकाण्य् आददुस् तूर्णम् अर्जुनार्थे परंतपाः ॥
तथैव धनुर् आयच्छत् पार्थः शत्रुविनाशनः ॥
गाण्डीवं दिव्यकर्मा तद् राजन् दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥
तवापराधाद् धि नरा निहता बहुधा युधि ॥
नानादिग्भ्यः समाहूताः सहयाः सरथद्विपाः ॥
तेषाम् आसीद् व्यतिक्षेपो गर्जताम् इतरेतरम् ॥
दुर्योधनमुखानां च पाण्डूनाम् ऋषभस्य च ॥
tataś citrāṇi śubhrāṇi sumahānti mahārathāḥ ||
kārmukāṇy ādadus tūrṇam arjunārthe paraṃtapāḥ ||
tathaiva dhanur āyacchat pārthaḥ śatruvināśanaḥ ||
gāṇḍīvaṃ divyakarmā tad rājan durmantrite tava ||
tavāparādhād dhi narā nihatā bahudhā yudhi ||
nānādigbhyaḥ samāhūtāḥ sahayāḥ sarathadvipāḥ ||
teṣām āsīd vyatikṣepo garjatām itaretaram ||
duryodhanamukhānāṃ ca pāṇḍūnām ṛṣabhasya ca ||
Then the great warriors, chastisers of enemies, swiftly seized their many-colored, bright, exceedingly great bows against Arjuna; and Partha likewise drew his bow, Gandiva — the exterminator of enemies, performer of wondrous deeds — O king, by your evil counsel. For it is by your fault that men were slain in great numbers in battle — summoned from every quarter, with horses, chariots, and elephants. There was a clash between them, roaring at one another — between those led by Duryodhana and the bull [among] the Pandavas.

Sanjaya interrupts the string of praises for the banners with a direct rebuke: rājan durmantrite tava… tavāparādhāt — by your evil counsel, by your fault, people perish. Behind all the beauty of the standards he points to the true cause of the slaughter — the wicked design of Dhritarashtra and his son. It is telling that the messenger does not flatter but places the responsibility on the king. The verse teaches that the root of many deaths lies in the wrongful decision of one vested with power; and the grandeur of banners will not redeem the guilt of one whose durmantrita summoned nations to mutual annihilation.
