ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सात्वतस्य त्रिभिः शरैः ॥
विव्याध सूतं निशितैश् चतुर्भिश् चतुरो हयान् ॥
सात्यकिं च त्रिभिर् विद्ध्वा पुनर् विव्याध सो ऽष्टभिः ॥
दुःशासनः षोडशभिर् विव्याध शिनिपुंगवम् ॥
शकुनिः पञ्चविंशत्या चित्रसेनश् च पञ्चभिः ॥
दुःसहः पञ्चदशभिर् विव्याधोरसि सात्यकिम् ॥
tato duryodhano rājā sātvatasya tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
vivyādha sūtaṃ niśitaiś caturbhiś caturo hayān ||
sātyakiṃ ca tribhir viddhvā punar vivyādha so 'ṣṭabhiḥ ||
duḥśāsanaḥ ṣoḍaśabhir vivyādha śinipuṃgavam ||
śakuniḥ pañcaviṃśatyā citrasenaś ca pañcabhiḥ ||
duḥsahaḥ pañcadaśabhir vivyādhorasi sātyakim ||
Then King Duryodhana pierced the charioteer of the Sātvata [Sātyaki] with three sharpened arrows, and with four, the four horses; and having pierced Sātyaki with three, he pierced him again with eight. Duḥśāsana pierced the bull [of the] Śini [clan] with sixteen, Śakuni with twenty-five, and Citrasena with five; Duḥsaha pierced Sātyaki [in] the chest with fifteen.

Once more the many strike at once against the one — each contributing his share of arrows. But this only sets off the answer Satyaki is about to give. It is telling that the concord of the wicked is strong in number but not in righteousness. The verse teaches that the combined assault of many, set against one man guarded by dharma, only prepares their common disgrace: number without righteousness does not overcome the one behind whom truth stands.
