And your son, red-eyed [from] agitation, said to him: "Arjuna and Bhimasena, and Satyaki, unconquered, [those] great warriors, having conquered all the exceedingly great armies, tormentors of foes, have reached the vicinity of the king of Sindhu. If in battle Partha, the great warrior, has broken through, how have you been passed by Satyaki [and] Bhima, O bestower of honor? It has become a wonder in this world, like the drying up of the ocean — your defeat, O foremost of brahmins, by Satvata and by Arjuna."

Duryodhana marvels at "samudrasyeva śoṣaṇam" — Drona's defeat likened to the drying of the ocean. But in his reproach lies an unwitting admission of the truth: only those she herself shields could overcome the teacher. It is telling that the instigator seeks someone else to blame, never himself. The verse teaches that the wrongdoer in distress blames others: instead of seeing the root of his troubles in his own wrongdoing, he marvels and finds fault with those who failed to hold back the foe — for pride finds it easier to accuse than to repent.
