सानुकर्षपताकैश् च द्विपाश्वरथभूषणैः ॥
स्यन्दनैर् अपविद्धैश् च भग्नचक्राक्षकूबरैः ॥
tataḥ prāvartata nadī ghorarūpā mahāhave ||
babhūva ca viśeṣeṇa bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhinī ||
vāraṇāśvamanuṣyāṇāṃ rudhiraughasamudbhavā ||
saṃvṛtā gatasattvaiś ca manuṣyagajavājibhiḥ ||

The blood of elephants, horses, and men flows together into a single river -- an image of war as a torrent in which everything living and everything crafted by hand is drowned. It is telling that this river "increases fear among the fainthearted": the horror of slaughter itself becomes a weapon, breaking the spirit. The verse teaches that war turns both creatures and human handiwork into a flowing ruin; and a river of blood, however grandly sung, is merely the drain of all that once was living and made.
