अचिन्त्यम् अद्भुतं चैव तयोः कर्मातिमानुषम् ॥
दृष्ट्वा चारणसिद्धानां विस्मयः समपद्यत ॥
अग्नेर् वायुसहायस्य गतिः कक्ष इवाहवे ॥
आसीद् भीमसहायस्य रौद्रम् आधिरथेर् गतम् ॥
निपातितध्वजरथं हतवाजिनरद्विपम् ॥
गजाभ्यां संप्रयुक्ताभ्याम् आसीन् नडवनं यथा ॥
तथाभूतं महत् सैन्यम् आसीद् भारत संयुगे ॥
विमर्दः कर्णभीमाभ्याम् आसीच् च परमो रणे ॥
acintyam adbhutaṃ caiva tayoḥ karmātimānuṣam ||
dṛṣṭvā cāraṇasiddhānāṃ vismayaḥ samapadyata ||
agner vāyusahāyasya gatiḥ kakṣa ivāhave ||
āsīd bhīmasahāyasya raudram ādhirather gatam ||
nipātitadhvajarathaṃ hatavājinaradvipam ||
gajābhyāṃ saṃprayuktābhyām āsīn naḍavanaṃ yathā ||
tathābhūtaṃ mahat sainyam āsīd bhārata saṃyuge ||
vimardaḥ karṇabhīmābhyām āsīc ca paramo raṇe ||
Having seen the inconceivable and wondrous, superhuman deed of those two, astonishment arose among the charanas and siddhas. As fire, whose ally is the wind, courses over dry grass, such in battle was the fierce course of the son of Adhiratha joined with the fearsome Bhima. As a thicket of reeds trampled by two elephants locked in combat, such became the great army, O Bharata, in that clash.

The two, meeting, lay waste the army as fire fanned by wind consumes dry grass, as two elephants trample a reed-thicket: their combined fury is an elemental force, not a mere act of will. It is telling that even the charanas and siddhas are astonished: even dispassionate onlookers marvel at what is superhuman. The verse teaches that the enmity of the greatest becomes an impersonal, destroying power; where two such as these, like fire and storm, come together, it is not their quarrel that burns away, but everything living around them.
