स छिन्नधन्वा भीमेन धनंजयशराहतः ॥
कर्णो भीमाद् अपायासीद् रथेन महता द्रुतम् ॥
भीमो ऽपि सात्यकेर् वाहं समारुह्य नरर्षभः ॥
अन्वयाद् भ्रातरं संख्ये पाण्डवं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥
ततः कर्णं समुद्दिश्य त्वरमाणो धनंजयः ॥
नाराचं क्रोधताम्राक्षः प्रैषीन् मृत्युम् इवान्तकः ॥
स गरुत्मान् इवाकाशे प्रार्थयन् भुजगोत्तमम् ॥
नाराचो ऽभ्यपतत् कर्णं तूर्णं गाण्डीवचोदितः ॥

karṇo bhīmād apāyāsīd rathena mahatā drutam ||
bhīmo 'pi sātyaker vāhaṃ samāruhya nararṣabhaḥ ||
anvayād bhrātaraṃ saṃkhye pāṇḍavaṃ savyasācinam ||
tataḥ karṇaṃ samuddiśya tvaramāṇo dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
nārācaṃ krodhatāmrākṣaḥ praiṣīn mṛtyum ivāntakaḥ ||
sa garutmān ivākāśe prārthayan bhujagottamam ||
nārāco 'bhyapatat karṇaṃ tūrṇaṃ gāṇḍīvacoditaḥ ||
With his bow cut by Bhima, struck by Dhananjaya's arrows, Karna retreated from Bhima swiftly on his great chariot. Bhima, that bull among men, mounted Satyaki's carriage and followed his brother, the Pandava Savyasachin [Arjuna], into the fray. Then, taking aim at Karna, Dhananjaya, hastening, his eyes red with anger, loosed a naracha, as Antaka looses death. Swiftly sent by the Gandiva, that naracha flew at Karna, like Garutman in the sky seeking out the best of serpents.

Karna, so fearsome against a helpless man, retreats before Arjuna with his weapon intact: boldness toward the weak and caution before the strong often dwell in the same heart. It is telling that the brothers reunite — Bhima mounts Satyaki's carriage and follows Arjuna: love closes their ranks. The verse teaches that one who humiliated the defenseless flees from an equal; and the unity of loving kin, hastening to each other's aid, is more formidable than any solitary boasting.
