स्थः कृतस् ते सोत्तो ऽ मारि
प्रसायन् हादेवम् र्षशम् स्थितः
स्य तुष्टो हादेवो राणां दः प्रभुः
रे न्दयाम् तु व्रे रं नृपः
पुत्रम् च्छामि वन् यो निन्याच् छिनेः सुतम्
ध्ये रास्राणां दा न्याच् संयुगे
स्य तद् नं श्रुत्वा सोत्तस्य पार्थि
वम् अस्त्व् ति त्रोक्त्वा देवो ऽन्तधी

tadavasthaḥ kṛtas tena somadatto 'tha riṣa ||
pradayan madevam amarṣavaśam āsthitaḥ ||
tasya tuṣṭo madevo vaṇāṃ varadaḥ prabhuḥ ||
vareṇa chandam āsa sa tu vavre varaṃ nṛpaḥ ||
putram icchāmi bhagavan yo nihanyāc chineḥ sutam ||
madhye jasahasrāṇāṃ pa hanyāc ca saṃyuge ||
tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā somadattasya rthiva ||
evam astv iti tatroktvā sa devo 'ntaradhīyata ||

Traducción

"Brought by him into such a state, Somadatta then, o venerable one, propitiated Mahadeva, abiding in the grip of indignation. Pleased with him, Mahadeva, the lord, the bestower of boons, offered him the choice of a boon; and the king chose this boon: 'I desire a son, O Lord, who would slay the son of Shini and strike him with his foot in battle, in the midst of thousands of kings.' Having heard that speech of Somadatta, o sovereign, the god said there, 'so be it,' and vanished."
