पार्थो ऽहम् अस्मि तिष्ठ त्वं कर्णो ऽहं तिष्ठ फल्गुन ॥
इत्य् एवं तर्जयन्तौ तौ वाक्शल्यैस् तुदतां तथा ॥
युध्येतां समरे वीरौ चित्रं लघु च सुष्ठु च ॥
प्रेक्षणीयौ चाभवतां सर्वयोधसमागमे ॥
प्रशस्यमानौ समरे सिद्धचारणवातिकैः ॥
अयुध्येतां महाराज परस्परवधैषिणौ ॥
ततो दुर्योधनो राजंस् तावकान् अभ्यभाषत ॥
यत्ता रक्षत राधेयं नाहत्वा समरे ऽर्जुनम् ॥
निवर्तिष्यति राधेय इति माम् उक्तवान् वृषः ॥

ity evaṃ tarjayantau tau vākśalyais tudatāṃ tathā ||
yudhyetāṃ samare vīrau citraṃ laghu ca suṣṭhu ca ||

praśasyamānau samare siddhacāraṇavātikaiḥ ||
ayudhyetāṃ mahārāja parasparavadhaiṣiṇau ||
tato duryodhano rājaṃs tāvakān abhyabhāṣata ||
yattā rakṣata rādheyaṃ nāhatvā samare 'rjunam ||
nivartiṣyati rādheya iti mām uktavān vṛṣaḥ ||
"I am Partha, stand!" "I am Karna, stand, Phalguna!" — so threatening, the two of them stung each other with word-darts. The heroes fought in battle wondrously, lightly, and excellently, and made a wondrous sight at the gathering of all the warriors. Praised in battle by siddhas, charanas, and wanderers, they fought, O great king, each seeking the other's death. Then Duryodhana, O king, addressed your men: "Guard Radheya vigilantly; he will not turn back without having slain Arjuna in battle."

The duel of Arjuna and Karna is so splendid that siddhas and charanas praise it, and the warriors watch as at a spectacle. It is telling that the mutual cries "I am Partha!", "I am Karna!" join challenge with recognition of an equal. The verse teaches that the meeting of the worthy is not only mortal enmity but mutual acknowledgment of greatness; even those seeking each other's death honor one another, for valor recognizes valor.
