युक्तं गजनिभैर् वाहैः पिशाचवदनैः खरैः ॥
स सूतम् अब्रवीत् क्रुद्धः सूतपुत्राय मा वह ॥
स ययौ घोररूपेण रथेन रथिनां वरः ॥
द्वैरथं सूतपुत्रेण पुनर् एव विशां पते ॥
स चिक्षेप पुनः क्रुद्धः सूतपुत्राय राक्षसः ॥
अष्टचक्रां महाघोराम् अशनिं रुद्रनिर्मिताम् ॥
ताम् अवप्लुत्य जग्राह कर्णो न्यस्य रथे धनुः ॥
चिक्षेप चैनां तस्यैव स्यन्दनात् सो ऽवपुप्लुवे ॥

sa sūtam abravīt kruddhaḥ sūtaputrāya mā vaha ||
sa yayau ghorarūpeṇa rathena rathināṃ varaḥ ||
dvairathaṃ sūtaputreṇa punar eva viśāṃ pate ||
sa cikṣepa punaḥ kruddhaḥ sūtaputrāya rākṣasaḥ ||
aṣṭacakrāṃ mahāghorām aśaniṃ rudranirmitām ||
tām avaplutya jagrāha karṇo nyasya rathe dhanuḥ ||
cikṣepa caināṃ tasyaiva syandanāt so 'vapupluve ||
...and mounting the chariot again, again wrought by magic, yoked with elephant-like horses, donkeys with the faces of pishachas, he spoke to the charioteer, enraged: 'Drive me to the son of the suta.' He advanced on the fearsome-looking chariot, best of warriors, to a duel of two chariots with the son of the suta once more, O lord of peoples. He hurled again, enraged, at the son of the suta, the rakshasa, an eight-wheeled, most terrible thunderbolt, wrought by Rudra. Leaping down, Karna caught it, laying his bow down on the chariot.

Ghatotkacha hurls a thunderbolt wrought by Rudra — but Karna, leaping down, catches it with his hands: audacity bordering on the miraculous. It is significant with what composure he lays down his bow to catch the divine weapon. The verse teaches that supreme courage is joined with presence of mind: where another would flee from the gods' thunderbolt, a master catches it in flight; and in this calm daring lies the measure of one who fears not even the weapons of heaven itself.
