वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे घोरे देवासुरोपमे ॥
अब्रवीत् क्षत्रियांस् तत्र धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
अभिद्रवत संयत्ताः कुम्भयोनिं महारथाः ॥
एष वै पार्षतो वीरो भारद्वाजेन संगतः ॥
घटते च यथाशक्ति भारद्वाजस्य नाशने ॥
यादृशानि हि रूपाणि दृश्यन्ते नो महारणे ॥
अद्य द्रोणं रणे क्रुद्धः पातयिष्यति पार्षतः ॥
ते यूयं सहिता भूत्वा कुम्भयोनिं परीप्सत ॥
vartamāne tathā yuddhe ghore devāsuropame ||
abravīt kṣatriyāṃs tatra dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
abhidravata saṃyattāḥ kumbhayoniṃ mahārathāḥ ||
eṣa vai pārṣato vīro bhāradvājena saṃgataḥ ||
ghaṭate ca yathāśakti bhāradvājasya nāśane ||
yādṛśāni hi rūpāṇi dṛśyante no mahāraṇe ||
adya droṇaṃ raṇe kruddhaḥ pātayiṣyati pārṣataḥ ||
te yūyaṃ sahitā bhūtvā kumbhayoniṃ parīpsata ||
When the battle thus went on, terrible, like the battle of gods and asuras, Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, said to the kshatriyas there: "Attack, having girded yourselves, upon Kumbhayoni, O great charioteers! Here the hero Parshata [Dhrishtadyumna] has engaged with Bharadvaja and strives with all his might for the destruction of Bharadvaja. Whatever omens are seen by us in the great battle — today Drona in battle, enraged, will be felled by Parshata; you, having united, overcome Kumbhayoni."

Yudhishthira reads the omens and calls all to unite around the instrument fate has appointed — Dhrishtadyumna. It is telling that even the king of dharma steps onto a path where victory is won by the combined assault of many against one: the coming deed already casts its shadow over the purity of his name. The verse teaches that in the hour when what is foreordained comes to pass, even the righteous are drawn into its current; and the true drama lies not in the strength of weapons but in how duty and destiny press upon conscience.
